Special Guest Joins Carers Plus Yorkshire for Afternoon Tea
23/02/2026
To mark the end of its 30th anniversary year, Carers Plus Yorkshire hosted a celebratory tea party, marking three decades of support and paying tribute to the late John Suddaby, Chair of Trustees. The event was originally due to be attended by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, as President of Carers Trust. However, due to adverse weather conditions, Her Royal Highness was unable to attend, and the event welcomed His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Mrs Johanna Ropner.
On arrival, the Lord-Lieutenant was formally presented to Carers Plus Yorkshire Chair of Trustees, Michael Hunt, and Chief Executive Officer, Elizabeth McPherson. Also in attendance were North Yorkshire Council’s Corporate Director for Health and Adult Services, Richard Webb, and Member of Parliament for Scarborough and Whitby, Alison Hume.
Michael and Elizabeth opened the celebrations with speeches reflecting on 30 years of supporting clients across the region. They spoke of the charity’s growth, the resilience of unpaid carers, and the collective effort of staff and volunteers who continue to make the work possible. They also thanked guests for their continued commitment and presence on such a significant occasion.
Following the speeches, the Lord-Lieutenant took time to meet and speak with guests from across the charity’s services, including Adult Carers, Veteran Carers, Young Adult Carers and Young Carers. She also met dedicated volunteers, staff members, and Trustees, hearing first-hand about the charity’s work and the difference it makes to unpaid carers and their families.
A particularly poignant moment followed, as Elizabeth shared heartfelt words about John. She reflected: “John joined the Board of Trustees over 10 years ago, becoming Chair in November 2024. John was a very caring and passionate Trustee, who gave his full support and backing to all those within the charity. John had previously accessed support while caring for his mother who had Dementia. He had been a passionate advocate for carers, with a strong desire to raise awareness and increase recognition of their contributions.”
The Lord-Lieutenant was then invited to present a posthumous long service award to John, which was collected on his behalf by his husband, Peter. It was a deeply moving part of the afternoon, as guests took a moment to remember John.
To conclude the formal proceedings, the Lord-Lieutenant kindly cut a commemorative cake and delivered a speech acknowledging the work of the charity. She spoke warmly about the dedication of unpaid carers and acknowledged that championing and recognising carers is a cause long supported by The Princess Royal. Guests then enjoyed an afternoon tea of sandwiches, scones and cakes. The room was filled with conversation and happy memories as everyone chatted together, not only reflecting on the past 30 years but looking ahead with optimism to the future. Carers Plus Yorkshire extends its sincere thanks to all the clients who joined the celebration.
