Volunteer Week - Parkrun 'take over'

Volunteers Week celebrations at North Yorkshire Water Park parkrun

Always looking for new challenges and ways to celebrate volunteering, the team at Carers Plus Yorkshire recruited family and friends to undertake a volunteer ‘takeover’ on 28th May at the Parkrun hosted by North Yorkshire Water Park parkrun on the 28th May.  For those that don’t know, parkrun is a free, weekly 5k event at place all across the UK where participants can run, jog, walk or volunteer!

The event at the Water Park is the newest in the region, starting in February this year, quickly becoming established with a good number of regular runners and of course the all-important volunteers without whom the event could not take place.

On the 28th the CPY team certainly made a splash, with a cracking team of 16 staff, family, friends (plus 3 pet dogs!) joining the core team of volunteers to help runners maximise their run experience and keep everyone safe during the event.

The Carers Plus volunteers were mostly new to parkrun too; they all thoroughly enjoyed the morning, cheering on the runners, joggers and walkers with great enthusiasm and there is even rumour of a number of them returning next week…  The Volunteers also saw a wide range of ages, our youngest being just 7 years old but what a great job he did on Barcode Scanning.

In supporting the event by volunteering, CPY was proud to have raised the profile of the Charity and the role of unpaid family Carers to the 125 runners and their families.  For many attending on the day, their involvement in micro-volunteering in this way (gifting just 3 hours on a Saturday morning) was the start of something special.  Notwithstanding the wonderful on-site breakfast after the run, we believe a number of the team are now hooked! Volunteering really is a bug, and doing this in a wonderful environment, in the fresh air, was certainly a fabulous introduction to finding out more about how they can contribute and keep their wellbeing topped up.
